SEC Week 3 Predictions

Week 3 is where early identities begin to collide. Lane Kiffin returns to Oxford with LSU, Florida visits Auburn for the first real test of both teams, and Mississippi State tries to prove its breakout offense is more than a two-week story at South Carolina.

LSU at Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin is returning to the program where he won 55 games, and four former Ole Miss players followed him to Baton Rouge. Pete Golding is coaching his first SEC game as the Rebels’ head coach. The storyline is unavoidable, but the football question is more useful: can Ole Miss make LSU earn every yard?

Sam Leavitt has 574 passing yards through two games but has also thrown four interceptions, including three against Louisiana Tech. LSU has elite answers with Tredes Green, Winston Watkins and Eugene Wilson, while Ole Miss can pressure Leavitt with a defense built around pass containment and passing-down closeout. The model gives Ole Miss a 51.9% win probability and projects 27.6–26.8, despite a market that favored LSU by roughly 2.5 points. Model pick: Ole Miss. Personal pick: LSU by a field goal.

Florida at Auburn

Both teams are 2–0, but neither has answered the question that matters most. What does Florida look like in an SEC road game? Jaden Ball has 296 rushing yards and five touchdowns, Aaron Philo has thrown for 517 yards and five scores, and Florida’s special teams have already produced three punt-return touchdowns.

Auburn has a quarterback who has played in Alex Golesh’s system for four years. Byron Brown responded to a three-interception opener with a clean performance against Southern Miss, and Auburn ran for 343 yards. The model gives Florida a 66% win probability and projects a 28–22 victory, while the market had Florida by only 2.5. Auburn’s scheme and Jordan-Hare environment can make this uncomfortable, but Florida has more ways to win. Pick: Florida 28, Auburn 23.

Mississippi State at South Carolina

Mississippi State has gone from an interesting preseason projection to a team the SEC may need to take seriously. Cameron Matthews has 581 passing yards, seven touchdown passes and no interceptions, while the Bulldogs have also run for 252 yards in a road win at Minnesota.

South Carolina answered with 405 rushing yards against Towson and another strong performance from LaNorris Sellers. This is the first opponent capable of attacking Mississippi State’s preferred structure, especially its early-down run game. The model gives South Carolina more than an 80% win probability and projects the Gamecocks by roughly two touchdowns, creating an almost 8.5-point gap from the early market line. Pick: South Carolina.

Around the SEC

Georgia carries a 94.2% model win probability at Arkansas. Texas A&M is a 95.9% favorite over Kentucky, and Alabama is a 90.9% favorite against Florida State. Missouri is favored over Troy, Oklahoma over Tulsa, Tennessee over Kennesaw State, and Ole Miss’ remaining Week 3 opponent is a clear favorite situation.

The full Week 3 board is locked with Ole Miss, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Texas A&M, Alabama, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn and the other SEC favorites recorded on the SEC Recap board. The important distinction is that model disagreement does not automatically mean an against-the-spread bet. It tells us where the game deserves more attention.

What Week 3 will tell us

Can Ole Miss force LSU to take the long way down the field? Can Florida stay composed if Jaden Ball does not immediately create explosives? And is Mississippi State’s offense real enough to function when South Carolina attacks its structure? Those are the tests that will separate early-season noise from durable team identity.
