2026 SEC Football Preview · Texas A&M

Back to the CFP?

Texas A&M broke through in 2025, started 11–0 and reached the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history. Now Mike Elko has to prove the Aggies have built a program capable of staying near the top of the SEC—not just a team that caught lightning for one season.

Texas A&M 2026 projection

Projected record

9–3 overall

SEC record

6–3

Strict pick card

10–2 overall

Expected wins

8.72 wins

The SEC Precap™ model projects Texas A&M to finish 9–3, with approximately 8.72 expected wins and a 98.7% chance of reaching bowl eligibility. The strict game-by-game card is more aggressive, picking the Aggies in 10 of 12 games. That gap is the central story: Texas A&M is favored often, but several of those advantages are modest rather than overwhelming.

What happened in 2025?

Texas A&M finished 11–2 overall and 7–1 in SEC play after opening the season 11–0. The Aggies averaged 33.8 points and 444.5 yards per game while allowing only 21 points and 370 yards. They won at Notre Dame, defeated LSU 49–25 and reached the CFP for the first time in program history.

The season ended with losses to Texas and Miami, but those results should not erase what Elko’s team accomplished. Texas A&M looked disciplined, physical and nationally relevant for most of the season. The 2026 question is not whether the Aggies belong in the contender conversation. It is whether they can live there consistently.

Why the model lands at 9–3 instead of 10–2

Texas A&M is favored in Missouri State, Arizona State, Kentucky, LSU, Arkansas, Missouri, The Citadel, South Carolina, Tennessee and Oklahoma. The only two games currently marked as losses are at Alabama and against Texas.

But a strict pick card converts every win probability above 50% into a full win. The season model sums the probabilities instead. The five bankable games contribute about 4.59 expected wins, the middle tier contributes roughly 3.24, and Alabama plus Texas contribute about 0.88 combined. That produces approximately 8.71 expected wins, which rounds to a strong 9–3 projection.

That is not the model being low on Texas A&M. The Aggies are one of the SEC’s top four teams by projected wins. It is simply recognizing that LSU at 61%, Missouri at 69%, South Carolina at 68%, Tennessee at 69% and Oklahoma at 68% are not automatic victories.

The schedule creates a narrow path to the ceiling

The five bankable games are Missouri State, Arizona State, Kentucky, Arkansas and The Citadel. Winning those games gets Texas A&M to five victories before the seven-game deciding group: LSU, Missouri, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas.

To reach nine wins, the Aggies need to go 4–3 in that deciding seven. To reach 10, they need to go 5–2. Eleven wins would require a 6–1 run through a schedule that includes road games at LSU, Missouri, Alabama, South Carolina and Oklahoma. That is why 10–2 is the realistic ceiling rather than 11–1 or 12–0.

The road burden is significant: only Tennessee and Texas from that deciding group are at home. Texas A&M is good enough to travel, but the Aggies cannot afford sloppy execution in the middle-tier games if they want the playoff-level version of this season.

Texas A&M 2026 swing games

These are the games most likely to separate the Aggies’ seven-win floor from their 10-win ceiling.

Three keys to beating the projection

Get a cleaner Marcel Reed. Reed already provides explosive plays and a legitimate rushing threat. The next step is better decision-making, fewer empty possessions and a little more weekly consistency without removing the aggression that makes him dangerous.

Build the support structure around him. Texas A&M returns Mario Craver, but the Aggies need a dependable second and third receiving option and a reliable offensive line. Reed cannot be asked to solve every problem by himself.

Replace defensive havoc. Elko’s defense lost important disruption across the front seven and linebacker room. Texas A&M does not need to start over, but the new core has to scale quickly and preserve the aggressive identity that made last year’s team so difficult to play.

Key players for Texas A&M in 2026

Marcel Reed completed 62.1% of his passes for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his first full season as the starter. He added 493 rushing yards and six touchdowns, giving him 3,662 yards of total offense. His ceiling is the clearest path from nine wins to the playoff conversation.

Mario Craver returns after catching 59 passes for 917 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 15.5 yards per catch, finished sixth in the SEC in receiving yards and had a 207-yard performance against Notre Dame that included an 86-yard touchdown. The question is who emerges as the dependable option behind him.

DJ Hicks produced 26 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks despite starting only two games in 2025. A larger role could give the Aggies the interior disruption they need. Dalton Brooks brings veteran versatility after recording 62 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

Mike Elko and the coordinator transition

Elko is 19–7 through two seasons, the second-best two-year start by a head coach in Texas A&M history. The Aggies have beaten five ranked teams under Elko, including three top-10 opponents. The program now has a recognizable identity: physical, organized and difficult to play against.

Holman Wiggins takes over the offense after two seasons as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. His Alabama background and direct connection to Craver and the receiver room make the promotion a logical continuity move. Lyle Hemphill takes over defensively after working with Elko at Duke and brings an aggressive résumé built around sacks and turnovers. Travis Williams, Elijah Robinson and Adam Cushing provide additional continuity on both sides of the ball.

Texas A&M floor, projection and ceiling

Floor: 7–5

The Aggies lose multiple swing games, fail to steal Alabama or Texas and experience more coordinator-transition volatility than expected.

Projection: 9–3

Texas A&M banks the five clear wins and goes 4–3 in the deciding seven.

Ceiling: 10–2

The Aggies win every projected favorite and steal one of the two games currently marked as losses.

Defining question

Can Texas A&M turn last year’s breakthrough into a sustainable program standard?

Final SEC Precap™ prediction

Texas A&M is projected to finish 9–3 overall and 6–3 in SEC play. The strict 10–2 card shows that a double-digit-win season is absolutely on the table, while the 8.72 expected-win total explains why the model expects one or two medium-confidence games to slip away.

The Aggies no longer need to prove they belong among the SEC contenders. They proved that in 2025. Now they need to prove they can remain there. If Reed becomes more efficient, the receiver hierarchy develops and the defense keeps creating havoc, Texas A&M can beat the baseline and push back into the College Football Playoff conversation.
